A foreign national who has permission of landing has some restrictions on the kind of work that he/ she can get. The restrictions depend on the status of residence you have.
In the case where a foreign national wants to work in Japan, you must already have a job before visiting Japan. In addition, you need a (so-called) working visa along with a
certificate of eligibility when you enter Japan.

You must already have a job before visiting Japan, when you apply for certificate of eligibility to the immigration office, you should receive a certificate of authorization that is applicable to the annexed table I−1,2 or II of Immigration Control Act. Then you are permitted to enter Japan.
Types of status of residence that many people apply are:

1.Specialist in Humanities / International Services:
 Language instructors at a private enterprise ( Teacher at elementary school,
 junior high schools and high schools is the type of status residence of Instructor),
 interpreters, translators or employees of Trade Company.

・Specialist in Humanities:
 
The basic level that requires is to graduate from university of sociology or art
 (humanities) fields.
・International Services:
 
The applicant must have at least 3 years experience in the relevant job, for example,  overseas translations, fashion or interior design, product development, public
 relations or similar work.
However, when you engage in language instructor or
 interpreter or translator, you don’t need these experiences as long as you have
 graduated from a university.

2. Engineer:
 
The basic level of requirement is to graduate from a university of technology
 field
(including the experiences that technical college gives you over 10 years).
 Information technology engineers, designers

3. Skilled labor: The basic level of requirement is that you have experiences
 involving the ethnic cooking or production of foreign foods
for over 10 years.

4. Entertainer: Entertainers who have experiences in foreign countries for over 2  
 years. (Theatrical performance, musical performance, dance, etc)

doesn’t apply to) Cultural Activities, Temporary Visitor
4.The types of status of residence that do not qualify a foreign national to
work in Japan:(Criteria provided for the Ministry of Justice Ordinance
apply to) College Student, Pre-college Student, Trainee, Dependent
5.The type of status of residence of activities which are specifically
designated
by the Minister of Justice for foreign individuals: Designated
Activities(working holiday, etc)
6. The types of status of residence that have no restriction on his/
her activities including working:Permanent Resident, Spouse or Child of
Japanese National, Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident, Long Term
Resident (Nisei, Sansei, etc)
